| The Angkor Dance Troupe performed Apsara at the historic Cyclorama, Boston Center for the Arts on April 6th 2006. The "Evening of Sacred Dances" was part of the Faith Quilts Project, and also included classical Indian and Chinese dance, and Sufi Whirling Dervishes.
The Apsara Dance was created by the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh in the 1950's, but it has it roots in the 9th century Angkor empire. The Apsara Dance is based upon the statues and sculptures of dancers found in Cambodia’s great ancient temples, such as Angkor Wat. Apsaras are celestial beings who linked the human world to the gods. This is a sacred dance for special occasions, originally only performed for royalty. The gold flowers the dancers carry symbolize the well-being of the Cambodian people and the golden head-dresses evoke the tall spires of Angkor Wat. |
